Karnan is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Mari Selvaraj, and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his V Creations banner. The film stars Dhanush, Lal, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam, Rajisha Vijayan, Gouri G. Kishan and Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli. It marks the Tamil debut of Rajisha Vijayan.

The film features musiccomposed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography handled by Theni Eswar, and editing done by Selva R. K. It features the titular character Karnan, hailing from a conservative background, fighting for the rights of his people.[1] The storyline is influenced from the Manjolai riots of 1999 and 1997 Melavalavu massacre.[2]
After a brief-long pre-production work, the film was launched in January 2020, with the title Karnan was also announced. The film is mostly set in the suburbs of Tirunelveli district. Shooting of the film took place, following its launch, and was completed on December 2020; although production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was theatrically released on 9 April 2021.[3]

Music
The film's soundtrack is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, in his second collaboration with Mari Selvaraj after Pariyerum Perumal, and fourth collaboration with Dhanush after Kodi, Vada Chennai and Jagame Thandhiram. On November 2019, Santhosh started the music production of the film with some folk artists across Tamil Nadu.[38] The background music resembling of a folk genre, accompanied by Thavil and Nadaswaram in the making video received viral response from fans.[39] On December 2020, singer Manikka Vinayagam recorded one of the songs in the film,[b] with Santhosh highlighting the song as a major one in the film.[40] The film's audio rights were purchased by Think Music.[41]
The music video of the film's first single titled "Kandaa Vara Sollunga" was unveiled on 18 February 2021,[42] which was preceded by a promotional launch event and the single was released in all streaming platforms.[43][44] The video was shot in monochrome featuring the singers Santhosh Narayanan and Kidakkuzhi Mariyammal, crooning the song in a studio setting, with a band of folk musicians and percussionists performing in the background.[45] It received positive response from fans and the video crossed 1 million views within 24 hours of its release.[46]
The second song "Pandarathi Puranam" was released on 2 March 2021. The second single is an oppari number, which was led by native folk instruments such as nadaswaram, thavil, pambai, thalam and urumi, performed by Marungan and Haridas of the Ramanathapuram Marungan Melam Team. This song was crooned by veteran composer Deva, with additional vocals by Reetha Anthony, and was written by Yugabharathi.[47] "Pandarathi Puranam", begins with an ode to a woman by the name Pandarathi, which is about his husband's love to the woman, and his agony over her untimely death due to illness. The song is set in a funeral featuring all of its lead cast members.[48] Later, it was reported that a resident of Madurai named Prabhu filed a petition in Madurai High Court against the makers, claiming that the use of the term “Pandarathi” was offensive to certain communities in Tamil Nadu. In response, director Selvaraj revealed that the song was retitled as "Manjanathi Puranam" and replacing the word "Pandarathi" with "Manjanathi" on the lryics to avoid any further complications.[49]
The third song "Thattaan Thattaan" was released on 11 March 2021. The song, which is a folksy romantic number, was written by Yugabharathi. The song was sung by actor Dhanush and Meenakshi Illayaraja and is centered around the actor himself and Rajisha Vijayan.[50]
The fourth single titled "Uttradheenga Yeppov", was released on 31 March 2021. While the lyrics of the fourth single was written by the director Selvaraj himself, the song was sung by Santhosh Narayanan and his daughter Dhee. The song begins as a fast peppy dance number, in complete contrast to the tone set by the film's other songs, but is mixed with Parai beats like the other songs from the film.[51
